Soroptimist Live Your Dream

Valley Voice: Soroptimist International Palm Desert is looking to help women

Soroptimist International of Palm Desert is one of nearly 1,300 clubs that make up Soroptimist International of the Americas, a global organization that works to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.

The Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Award for Women provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training.

The award can be used for tuition, books, child care, car fare or any other education-related expense. This award provides over $2.5 million in cash grants to head-of-household women in need each year. Since the program’s inception in 1972, more than $30 million has helped tens of thousands of women achieve their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families.

Glenn Miller, Mayor
City of Indio

Our benefactor, Mayor of Indio, Glenn Miller, has established “The Phyllis J. Sullivan Award” to honor his mother. This will be an annual SIPD award within our Soroptimist Live Your Dream program for $1,500 to our 1st place honoree, in addition to her LYD award.  Our first place recipient is then forwarded for further consideration at the District level, and possible additional consideration at Soroptimist Region and Federation levels.

We are proud to announce that our 2021 winner, Laci Murphy, has been chosen as one of three winners at the Soroptimist District level and will be presented with her award at our Virtual 2021 Soroptimist Spring Conference, May 29/30, 2021.  Congratulations Laci!

Our focus is on education because educated women and girls are:

less vulnerable to sex traffickers

more likely to leave a domestic violence situation and not return

able to access healthcare

less likely to live in poverty

able to raise stronger, healthier families
